Abstract

<p><b>Date of election</b>: 1 October 2006</p>
<p><b>Main issues</b>: In campaigning for the 2006 elections ÖVP highlighted the business-friendly tax cuts implemented by Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel's government. The opposition SPÖ argued that ÖVP policies had increased inequalities among the population and pledged to deal with youth unemployment. The FPÖ called for the expulsion of foreigners from Austria. The Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ) formed in April 2005 by former FPÖ leader Mr. Jörg Haider also campaigned on an anti-immigration platform.</p>
<p><b>Outcome of election</b>: The final results gave a narrow majority to the SPÖ which won 68 seats followed by the ÖVP with 66 and the FPÖ with 21. The Greens won 20 seats while the BZÖ won eigth. After three months of negotiations a grand coalition between the SPÖ and the ÖVP was finalized when the two parties reached an agreement on budget issues. Mr. Gusenbauer was sworn in as Prime Minister on 11 January 2007.</p>

Notes

Errors: Three minor errors are found in the municipalities 30913 Moorbach Harbach (AT 124), 61219 Johnsbach (AT222) and 61614 Modriach (AT 225) where the numbers of persons entitled to vote are given as smaller than the number of votes.  

Abroad votes: Available on national levels.

NUTS structure and electoral units: Election results are reported for the municipalities, which correspond with the NUTS 5 statistical regions aggragated into the 35 NUTS 3 units. Changes to the administrative structure:61402 Falkendorf and 61426 Sankt Ruprecht ob Murau as of 2005 constitute the municipality of Sankt Ruprecht-Falkendorf (61436).
