Dataset: Austria: Presidential Election 2004

Abstract

Date of election: 25 April 2004

The latest presidential election in Austria was held in 2004, and was the first since the controversial coalition between the Christian Democratic ÖVP and the right-wing, populist FPÖ came to power in February 2000. The ÖVP put forward Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the incumbent Minister of Foreign Affairs, as its candidate, while SPÖ nominated Heinz Fischer, a university professor of political science and second president of the Nationalrat. The FPÖ and the Greens abstained from nominating candidates.

At 71.6 percent, voter turnout reached an all-time low in the history of presidential elections. Fischer won over Ferrero with 52.4 against 47.6 percent of the votes.
